2015 Summer ReadingBy: Aliyah Lasley
Now nobody likes summer reading projects. It doesn’t matter if you like to read or not. Trust me I know. Just because I like to read doesn’t mean I enjoy these projects. You know what makes doing summer reading projects worst? Not liking reading. Usually people that hate or strongly dislike reading is because they haven’t found the right books to read. Everybody is different some like horror some like mystery. Now here’s a list of books that may or may not make this summer easier for you. Series Theses books are probably for someone likes to read or somebody is trying to get into reading. 1. Divergent (First book in the Divergent Series) By Veronica Roth Divergent is similar to all the other Sci-Fi future books that are popular. For example The Maze Runner by James Dashner or the Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Legend by Marie Lu. They all focus on the future and have teenagers as the main characters. Divergent takes place in the future version of Chicago, where they have five different fractions. Beatrice Prior grew up in the Abnegation faction which means that her parents are apart of the Abnegation faction. People a part of the Abnegation faction are selfless and are willing to go out of their way to help someone. Candor are honest, Dauntless are brave, Amity are peaceful, and Erudite are the most intelligent. Then there’s the factionless, they’re basically like us. They don’t belong to a certain group or faction. To be factionless you have to either have been kicked out of the faction, you’re apart of or willingly leave. 2. The Hunger Games (First book in The Hunger Games Trilogy) By Suzanne Collins The Hunger games takes place in a post-apocalyptic North America, a nation called Panem. The nation is made up of 12 districts surrounding the Capital. The 12 districts are much poorer than the Capital. Early in the history of Panem there were 13 districts not only 12. However the 13th district lead a rebellion against the capital. This rebellion lead to the destruction of the 13th district and the creation of the Hunger Games. The Hunger Games is the way that the Capital shows that they’re in power. They choose one boy and one girl randomly from each district, between the ages twelve and eighteen. The tributes are forced to fight to the death in a arena. The last tribute to still be alive is the winner. It’s very uncommon for a person to volunteer as a tribute for the Hunger Games, let alone in district 12. Although it happened when 16 year-old Katniss’s, younger little sister Prim was chosen as a tribute. Katniss and her male companion Peeta are up against some representatives who have been preparing for this almost their whole lives. For Katniss it’s a death sentence, having to survive. Nonetheless for her surviving, is a second nature. 3.The Selection (#1 in The Selection series) By Kiera Cass The Selection is the chance of a lifetime, at least to some girls. An opportunity to escape the life that was laid out for them since birth. To be able to live in a palace and compete for the heart of Prince Maxon. The Selection doesn’t seem to be a chance of a lifetime for America Singer, it’s more of a nightmare. It means leaving her secret lover Aspen -who is a caste below her- behind. It means leaving her home to enter a competition she doesn’t want to be apart and for a crown she definitely doesn't want. Then, America meets Prince Maxon. She starts to question all the plans she's made for herself--and realizes that the life she's always dreamed of may not compare to a future she never imagined. We were taught how to read and write, to listen and speak up, to ask and observe. We feel proud of ourselves when we accomplish something, and sometimes we forget who helped us achieve it. Yeah, our families support us, our friends gives us courage and our teachers taught us. They are all part of the bigger picture. However, recently teacher's appreciation week past and let's be honest...we didn't really acknowledge them, barely even mention it. Teachers deserve more credit. After all, haven't they re-explained patiently, encouraged us to keep learning and been there for us in after school touring? Yeah, we should really appreciate our teachers. However, as depressing as it sounds, everything eventually comes to an end. Or at least everything slightly changes. The end of the school year is coming and with it comes the goodbyes of the teachers. Many teacher, especially the middle school ones, are leaving after this year for different reasons. A great amount of teachers from seventh and eighth grade are leaving, but apparently all the ones from sixth grade are staying. Yeah, after spending at least a year with them, we are going to miss them a lot! Ms. Hosinski, the seventh grade English teacher, is one of the many middle school teachers who is leaving. She enjoys teaching seventh grade because she feels that that grade has “diverse personalities and funny attitudes”. However, it’s not only seventh grade that she feels has a great spirit, but the entire ANS community as well. ANS isn’t the first school she has taught, she also worked in a high school but she described it as a very difficult place for many students and very different to our school. Her sweet and patient personality makes her a perfect teacher, but believe it or not, she never really saw herself as one growing up. She wanted to be a newscaster, she liked the feeling when she spoke and presented in front of people, she liked knowledge and was interested in the news... However, this all changed when her history teacher in seventh grade told her that she would be an excellent teacher. The idea of teaching and helping students slowly grew into her mind, until she actually welcomed the idea. For her, being a teacher means knowing your students, and in the process getting to know yourself. Mr. Long, or Señor Jay, is the seventh grade science teacher, and along with his wife,Mrs. Long, is retiring after this school year. Mr. Long has taught many grades from elementary to high school, from third grade to twelfth grade, but says that he would rather teach middle school because the students are animated, energetic, unspoiled and still innocent. His least favorite grade to teach were third and fourth grade because the students needs are more emotional and need someone to hold their hand through the learning process. Even though he is a great teacher, that’s not what he wanted to be since he was little. His dream job was being a veterinarian because he loved taking care of animals and knew a lot about them since he worked on a farm. He decided to become a teacher in college when he joined peace court and began teaching students, but he never really know how much he would enjoy it. He likes ANS because it’s a place full of positive energy and nice students. However, he believes that the time that the school starts is too early because research shows that the student’s brain are not completely functional until later in the morning. He believes that the school is growing in a philosophical sense and has enjoy seeing his students grow. However, he believes that students who aren't serious about learning are just in the school to fill a spot and are dragging people down with them. However, in his opinion, teaching has been great for him. Ms. Frick, the eighth grade english teacher, is leaving ANS because she is “ready for a change”. Well, that and that she keeps on running from the future eighth graders. However, she plans to keep on teaching eighth grade in Chile, where she will starts working next school year. Her favorite thing about ANS is the students, their personalities and determinations to make a change. She believes that once you get her students excited about something, nothing can stop them. However, she believes that the school hasn’t gotten to the level the students can achieve and that they could still do so much better. Ms. Frick’s favorite grade to teach is eighth grade because even though it’s an awkward year, the students are developing deep thoughts and complicated concepts but that they still are innocent enough to believe whatever they want to. Her least favorite grade to teach was sixth grade because she believes they are too immature for her tough style of teaching. When she was in middle school she wanted to be an anthropologist because she was fascinated with the study of bones and the evolution of humans, she also wanted to solve the mysteries that might have surrounded the death of someone millions of years ago. She decided when to be a teacher because she already had a degree in creative writing and teaching became an option, so she decided to try it out. What was an experiment to figure out what she wanted to do in life, became a loving profession. Wherever your teacher teaches science or history, math or english, spanish or your elective, they all have taught you something. This teachers are a group of the few who are leaving this year, and this is their own little version of the time they have spent in ANS. They all had different goals when they were in middle school, some wanted to be newscasters, other wanted to be veterinarians, but the truth is that they all ended up being teachers and that happened for a reason. Yes, teachers teach you how to read and write, to listen and speak up, to ask and observe, but they also do so much more. It really doesn’t matter what subject they teach or how they teach it, but what you learn from them. Yes, you learned about mitosis and miosis and about root numbers and equation but you also learned how to be a better person. A lot of people in your life helps you grow as a person and one of those people are teachers. So, thank you teachers for everything, and have good luck wherever life takes you. Year-In ReviewBy: Vanessa Bendana August: Here, our long journey starts. We excitedly came back to a fresh new start, to a fresh new year. We nervously met our friends, teachers and classmates, hoping that this grade wouldn't be as terrifying as the other older students have told us, discovering that it was not that bad, actually pretty enjoyable. We had the welcome back ceremony, where we did fun activities to get us ready for the first day of school, and joined our favorite extracurricular activities. Now you felt ready to start this new adventure. September: As your second month in school, you still felt pretty vigorous and energetic. So, the ANS presidential elections took place. There were also some curious news, there was a meteorite that fell in the country, but we never really knew if it really was a meteorite. On the other hand, we proudly celebrated the 193rd anniversary of the Nicaraguan independence as Pinoleros!! Well... at least most of us? ANS organized the traditional ceremony and everyone did their incredible acts. To summarize only some of the acts, 6th Graders performed the national folkloric dance, showing off their colorful costumes and dresses. 7th Graders did a creative show, with different color balloons to commemorate all the good values that Nicaraguan heroes had, making the illusion of a bright rainbow. As for 8th Graders, they displayed all the beautiful costumes and dances that Nicaragua has, in order to represent the culture history of our country. In this month, the students with the determined trait chosen were, for 6th grade: Alberto Lugo, Anne Violette Astruc, Carmen Sandino, Claudia Flores. For seventh grade: Elinor Ketelhöhn and Ji Suk Chung, as for 8th grade: Xaviera Cuadra, Sofía Argeñal, Diego Rappaccioli, and Gabriel Cardenal. While the artist of the month was Vanessa Bendana. Furthermore, we also celebrated our Banned Books, all the way from the 21 to the 27. October: Isabella Hovgaard from 8th grade was chosen as the artist of the month. The Champions soccer league started, and there was and is still a rivalry between Real madrid and Barcelona. Similar as the National Football League season that also started. Moreover, the ANS Blood drive took place, and gladly lots of people charitably donated to save lives. Looking at international news, young scholars uprised the Hong Kong Protesting. Apple introduced their new and improved Iphone 6, everyone rushed to stores and you may be thinking, “ A new iphone, again! Every year it’s the same.” while others “But come on it’s an iphone!” and so without getting into the Android vs. Apple discussion, ISIS was striking and the Ebola crisis spreaded in through most of the world. But don’t forget about Halloween, people celebrated it happily and spent the night trick- or- treating! November: In this month, the 7th Annual November 2014 Poetry Contest was hosted to honor all of our amazing poets for giving their legacy and knowledge to the world. The middle school winners being from first to third places are: for 6th grade, Paulina Cuadra, Eduardo Gutierrez, and Anne-Violette Astruc with their “I Am” Poem. For 7th grade, Wei-Ting Shih, Julio Vargas, and Ethan Macdonald, doing the lyric poem. As for the 8th grader, the winners were Veronica Artiles, Alicia Pereira, and Avis Corea, writing a flip poem. All proudly created astonishing poems. We also took a moment to celebrate Thanksgiving, feeling fortunate and grateful of how blessed we are for having what we have and are today. And, there was also Black Friday, people razed the stores, seriously! December: Hohoho! Merry Christmas, here is your coal! There was pretty much nothing left after the Black Friday so.. Anyways, this month we relaxed and sipped warm chocolate in our cozy homes, opening gifts! Since this was a short month because of our vacation, there wasn’t much than chilling at home or going out to other countries. However, the artist of the month for both December and November was Elizabeth Pierson from 8th grade. Additionally, the track varsity team had recently returned from the AASCA Cross Country in Panama with successful winners! January: 2015, a happy new year! A fresh new start, but apparently, it didn’t go as well for some other people. Unfortunately, this month the car bomb in Yemen, the QZ8501 AirAsia Flight, the paris shooting in the Charlie Hebdo Magazine headquarters and Ukraine crisis took place. On top of that, Chikungunya was striking hard in Nicaragua. Looking at the bright side, how the popular saying stated “there's always a rainbow after a storm, when one door closes another one opens, after death there is life and after heartbreak there is a stronger and happier person”, scientifics started testing more for an Ebola Cure. The 69th National Basketball Association (NBA) season took place as well. Similar to the Nicaraguan baseball season, which came to an end. Additionally, an exciting art environmental project was started here in the school: How can you use art to change the world, while the chosen artist of the month was the Marcelo de los Santos from 7th Grade. February: This was a big month for sport lovers! February 1st was the annual 49th version of the Super Bowl, hosted by the National Football League! Also, February 19, 2015 was the Chinese New year, year of the goat/sheep, the 8th animal in the Chinese Zodiac. People during this sign are described as wise, kind, and charming dreamers. Additionally, Angelica Vivas and Sung-Eun Park from sixth grade, Andrea Martinez from seventh grade and Sofia Argeñal from eighth grade, were the chosen one for February for being well-rounded and ethical, while Jose Hernandez from 8th grade was chosen as the artist of the month! Furthermore, there was the Transasia plane crash in Taiwan. On the other hand, the news revealed that the U.S Navy made a robotic fire fighter and the new invention of the micro RFID chip implanted in the skin, replacing credit card and identifications. Not only this happened, but the Kermess took place February 6th with the “ It’s a Small World” theme, with different foods, fun games, prizes and the satisfaction of throwing a teacher in the dunk tank... just kidding, not really. As well as the “ISIS Crisis” you know, still committing crimes. And of course, Valentine's Day! Meaning netflix and a box of ice cream.... yeah, it’s sad. March: This month was busy, everyone was desperately excited to go on Semana Santa vacations. Moreover, the trend known as "The Dress" was everywhere in the media and all that could be heard in the corridors were: "Gold and White" "No, Black and Blue" for a few days. There was also the scandal of a German nurse killing patients. This month, ANS hosted the Special Olympics, students had a great time! Not many people celebrated St. Patrick's Day here at school, but we could spot some students dressed in green. However, the tragic accident of the Germanwings Flight 9525 took place, besides the violation that happened on a Florida beach, creating great outrage. But lets not forget the child with its own Iron Man robotic arm! As well as the talented artist of the month, Silvio Vargas in sixth grade. And, of course, there's always ISIS, luring women with Nutella and kittens. April: April Fool’s Day!...everyone forgot about it. Now, Carlos Roberto Navarro from 8th grade was chosen as the artist of the month. This may have been a short month because of Semana Santa, specially for 7th graders who went on Bosawas, but we took a moment to commemorated our beautiful home on Earth Day! Here, our journey ends. Congratulations students, teachers and staff for working hard and being so dedicated this great year! We have learned, we have expirienced, but specially, we have grown together. But don’t be sad, cause we will soon start a new journey tomorrow. Apple WatchBy: Frank Matus
The Apple Watch was released for in March but only on order format, in June it will be sold in Apple Stores. The Apple watch has 3 versions of the Apple Watch including sport, watch, and edition. Each version for different purposes that the buyer can use for their own purpose. The different watches were made to fit any person to use the watch. The buyer can choose which style they would like to choose to fit their unique personality. It is a very compatible device with most Apple Products. The Apple watch has a new design for the shapes of the apps. The apple watch is made in many colors, fits different personalities, and has a new unique design. The Apple Watch is made of Stainless Steel, and protected by a sapphire crystal. This is the original idea of the Apple Watch, it is the simple watch with many functions of the iPhone, but it requires an iphone to completely function with phone and messages. The Apple Watch has more colors to choose from a styles like Milanese Loop, Modern buckle, Leather Loop, and Classic Buckle. The Milanese Loop is the most unique band of the four bands. It was a loop made originated in Milan in the end of the 19th century. It is a completely magnetic chain. The Apple Watch: Sport has many advantages to the other watches. Including the style and comfort, it is comfortable enough for athletes to use to run and play. There are two sizes for the watch, thirty eight mm and forty two mm. The sizes depend on the type of arm size that the buyer has. There are five different sports watches, the white, blue, green, pink, and black. The watch itself is approximately sixty percent stronger than aluminum but just as strong. The Sport Watch is the simplest because it is not made for the most sophisticated use. The Apple Watch Edition is the most elegant of the three, made for extremely sophisticated use. It is made in one base color, gold. The Watch case is made of 18 karat gold, and it is twice as hard as gold. It is made for those who want an elegant stylish digital watch. There are many types of buckles the most common buckles are bright red, black classic, white sport, rose gray, black sport, and midnight blue. This watch is not a very common watch to use in everyday life but it is good for elegant events and to make a striking scene. The only con is that since it is made of 18 karat gold, it would not be recommended to use everyday on the street. The world has seen the three faces of the Apple Watch. Some people have said bad things about the Apple watch, but others have given it good reviews, it is mutually good and bad, the colors, the style, and the comfort along with the iPhone. All in all, the three styles of the watch fit the regular taste people, the athletic taste, and the elegant taste. The idea of having a watch synchronize with your phone, but it does exactly what your phone does but in a smaller wrist device format. It may not have games like Infinity Blade or Crossy Road, but it is a productive device that keeps you away from your phone. Because some people are too addicted to their phones, but this still doesn't keep them one hundred percent away from an iPhone. This Apple Watch has much more potential to be better. Berlin 2015By: Arlin Espinoza One of the most fascinating soccer events in the world is the UEFA Champions League. The Champions League is a tournament in which only the best soccer teams in Europe participate for the title. In this league ,Barcelona, Real Madrid, Juventus, Bayern Munich are the 4 teams that have been dominating because of their effort. On June 6, the whole world will have their eyes glued to their TV’s to watch the Barcelona-Juventus final. Juventus is a Italian team that has being successfully getting better each time because of their discipline and love to the sport. Juventus has players that have been World Cup finalist like Buffon & Pirlo, two amazing veterans. The semifinals were really exciting, and Barcelona won the first game 3-0, and Bayern won the second game 3-2. Juventus won the first game 2-1, and the tied the second 1-1.The ex Real Madrid player, Morata, who now plays for Juventus, scored for them in both games. On the other hand talking about the other finalist to play Juventus at the final is maybe known as the best team in the world. FC Barcelona is currently the most dominant of all european soccer leagues. FC Barcelona has the chance to win the triple championship if they win the Supercup of Spain, the Champions League and the Spanish league, La Liga BBVA. People thought Bayern were going to win because of the 7-0 they delivered to Barcelona in 2013 but not now in 2015, Barcelona won Bayern 5-3 in global which made Barcelona get to the finals against Juventus. My opinion about This final is that Barcelona has the 60% of changes of winning because they have the best squad of 2015 having the best strikers like Messi, Neymar and Luis Suárez. Barcelona in other words its a complete team that the only thing that needs is more young players because the average age of the players in Juventus is about 26 years of age. I think that in the other side, Juventus may win because that's how life is, you never know what will happen and maybe the things you would never expect to happen, do happen. I think that the one who takes the Cup is the best of all because like I said before, teams play for leadership and respect of other teams. |
Journalism 2015By: Frank Matus
Journalism opened my mind as a student, it made me more curious and taught me to always ask more than what is needed. Ms Frick was a very sincere teacher, she always told me the truth about my work. Journalism had a way that connected us not only as a class but as a newspaper. I believe that taking the journalism course was the right step, it interested me much more to move more along the lines of journalism. Not having Ms Frick next year for Journalism will change it, but she will always remind us what to do and what not to do. Our team was made up of ten individuals, Frank Matus, Claudio Rosales, Gabriel Vargas, Cinthia Campos, Aliyah Lasley, Vanessa Bendana, Wei Ting Shih, Maria Cobos, Leslie Coe, and Arlin Espinoza. This team has been publishing articles on the Tiger Times since the beginning of the second school semester. Not many people read the Tiger Times, but popularity isn’t what we can get out of this, it is the experience of publishing and writing about global current events. This team will be forever recorded in our individual history, we bonded with these people, we worked with these people in the short time of 4 months. I am glad that these people were in our News Team, without them, we would not be Journalism 7. Being a Journalism team takes a lot of hard work but it all pays off. We wrote about 3 articles a month, two minor articles and one major article per person. Sometimes we worked in teams, we had to depend on each other to work hard to publish a good story, not a mediocre paragraph. Working hard in journalism taught us thatt work does not come easy and good journalist techniques. Journalism techniques will always be in my head when I write an article. Having Ms Frick is a very unique and special way to learn journalism skills and grammatical skills. Writing an article is not hard but it takes a good amount of work. First, you need to find a global current event, you learn as much as you can from it, then you find a way to organize it into many paragraphs. The you write all the basic facts and events from what you learned in an organized way. Then you edit the paper looking for bad grammar and sentences that don’t make sense. You change those things that are incorrect and you check the entire paper from the point of view of a reader to see if every possible idea is included to give you the bigger picture and dive into the event. In the end, the article should allow anyone to understand exactly what happened. Ms Frick, the Journalism teacher was interviewed about the subject. “Journalism is a very nice elective for anyone, the students thought of almost everything journalists ask themselves, I helped with the editing and revising stage, sometimes I helped the students find out about what to write. I am happy that this choice was available for seventh graders because they can guide themselves to write good articles and publish a high quality digital newspaper” Ms Frick said. Just getting to know the students is enough of fun for me, sometimes they made me laugh, I like learning a student’s personality, I get to learn more about the students, we make fun of Claudio sometimes, we yell at Arlin because his music is too loud and leslie doesn’t pay attention, it lets me learn more of a student’s learning style, that is the best part about being the Journalism Teacher”. This elective was truly one of the best this year in my opinion. 10 Year- Old PregnancyBy: Cinthia Campos
Benitez Gilberto Zarate a 42 year old paraguayan man was accused of rapping a 10 year old girl which apparently is his stepdaughter and getting her pregnant. The man denied all they said about him and he demanded to do a DNA test to see if the child is from him. "I will do any [paternity] test to show it wasn't me," he said, adding: "I've been with tonnes of women, and I never got anybody pregnant"(Man arrested in Paraguay over alleged rape of stepdaughter whose case prompted abortion debate). Her mother didn’t know she was pregnant until one day her stomach hurt and hadded to take her to the hospital where they found out she was pregnant. A international group is helping the girl to have a abortion and they are trying to convince the government but they have denied it and said she couldn't have an abortion. The government says she is having appointments with the doctor and has been checking up and her pregnancy is normal as the others. "She has no pain or complications," said Dolores Castellanos, the doctor who heads the section and who has been tasked by the health ministry with supervising the girl's care (Man arrested in Paraguay over alleged rape of stepdaughter whose case prompted abortion debate). Also the government said they can’t accept an abortion except when the mother’s life is in danger and because the girl has 22 weeks of pregnancy it is dangerous to have an abortion now. Humanitarian groups said that the girls body is 34 kilograms and she cannot support it, when she have five months her life can be at risk. But still the health minister Antonio Barrios has said "The pregnancy will not be interrupted." "We've already completely ruled out abortion" (Man arrested in Paraguay over alleged rape of stepdaughter whose case prompted abortion debate). "The physical and psychological impact of forcing this young girl to continue with an unwanted pregnancy is tantamount to torture," Amnesty International official Guadalupe Marengo said this week. "The Paraguayan authorities cannot sit idly by while this young rape survivor is forced to endure more agony and torment" (Jason Hanna and Rafael Romo). Her mother has also been arrested."This girl was always in the hands of that man because the woman would leave to go to work," prosecutor Monalisa Munoz said. "She was at his mercy"(Man arrested in Paraguay over alleged rape of stepdaughter whose case prompted abortion debate). The girl has been taken to a children's hospital called Asuncion's Red Cross Hospital. That will be like her shelter where they will be checking her pregnancy. "The Justice Department will determine later who will have custody of the mother and child after (the birth)," Barrios said (Jason Hanna and Rafael Romo). If they approve that the man is guilty he will be 15 years in prison. Because of this it has been reported that in the world 2 million girls under 14 gave birth and many of them have health problems and can die after giving birth. Also 70,000 girls die each year because of health problems while giving birth or having problems with their pregnancy. Work Cited "Paraguay Blocks Abortion Request for Raped Girl, 10 - CNN.com." CNN. On the day May second, people all around the world were getting ready for what was one of the most spectacular moments in the history of boxing, Floyd (Money) Mayweather vs Manny (Pacman) Pacquiao. The fight took place in one of the most recognized places in the whole world, The MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Millions of people around the world have been expecting this fight over 5 years. Mayweather has not been defeated once in his career, and has a record of 47 straight wins without draws or loses, and 28 wins by KO. Pacquiao coming in with 57 wins, 5 losses, 2 draws and 38 wins by KO. Mayweather is statistically the best boxer in the Welterweight championship. He began as a junior boxer with a lot of potential, losing no fights in his youth career. Floyd fought against a WWE champion nicknamed “the Big Show” who at the time was and still is the largest athlete in the world. Floyd KO’d Big Show with a right hand to the jaw using a brass knuckle. He has fought against the best boxers in the world and currently is the number one pound per pound champion as a fighter. His toughest fight was when he fought against Oscar de la Hoya, a Mexican American fighter who back in 2009-2012 was the best fighter but, lost against Mayweather by unanimous decision. Manny (Pacman) Pacquiao is number five in the ranking as the best fighter of the world in the welterweight championship. He begun as a junior fighter winning his fights and each time got better. Manny Pacquiao for many people is the best fighter in the world because of his fast punches and his KO8 punches. Manny Pacquiao is maybe the fastest man to hit punches in one minute or second. He is a man that the 80% of his fights are won by KO. Manny’s hardest fight was against the Mexican boxer, Juan Manuel Marquez who defeated Pacquiao by KO. This fight, no one in the world expected Marquez to win because the 90% of the fight was dominated by Pacquiao but Pacquiao let an open space and Marquez took advantage of it and he KO him with a very hard and straight right to his jaws. Hearing people’s opinions, this wasn't the fight of the century because of Floyd. People thought that they were both going to have so much fear to each other that neither fighter would do anything. People say that Floyd passed the majority of time running away and that's why people say it wasn't the fight of the century, also because they gave the win to Mayweather when Pacquiao dominated the 70% of the fight. People's opinions are very important because by what the boxers hear from them, they try to not do that again so that they don't talk about them. Boxing is not only about hitting and hitting your opponent but, to be fast and strong because being faster helps you punch fast and hard you make more damage to your opponent. My opinion about this fight is that it should have been more exciting if they both would have had more opportunities or a draw. I agree with the people opinion about that they would have so much fear to each other that anyone would nothing to each other. I think that this could have had been much better and more exciting but, sports its about winning and the winner wasn't maybe the favorite for the fans. Of course it makes sense. You know, having the Mexican anthem sung in a boxing match between an American and a Filipino. This is exactly what happened on Saturday May 2nd, in the famous “Match of the Century” between world champions Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao after various years of negotiations. And while the match itself is another thing, this has been one of the most controversial points of the match, urging many people towards social media in order to share their confusion and indignance as to why the Mexican anthem was sung, and before the boxers’ own national anthems, no less! The reason for this sudden act was because of Cinco de Mayo, a holiday originally celebrated in Mexico that eventually spread to the United States. For many, especially those with Mexican roots, this yearly holiday is an opportunity for them to show their patriotism and love for their country of origin. This event also serves as a representation of their Mexican culture towards the world. And while it does not seem to involve the Americans much, they are the ones who have elevated this celebration into the high status it possesses today. Nevertheless, many people have no idea when Cinco de Mayo is celebrated, much less what it is about. And without this and other pieces of information, they are absolutely clueless on the true importance of Cinco de Mayo. However, now is the time to tell you the truth about this holiday, instead of all the misconceptions people are having about it. The first and most common misconception about Cinco de Mayo is that it is thought to be the date of the Mexican Independence. This is most certainly not true. The Mexican Independence is celebrated on September 16, the day in which Father Miguel Hidalgo called upon his friends, allies and fellow countrymen to take up arms and follow him, in order to revolt against Spain’s tyrannical hold on the country (and really, the rest of the Americas). This revolt, which would be called the Mexican Revolution in the near future, proved to be successful. In only a matter of weeks, despite the surprising odds, the Mexican rebels were able to vanquish much of the Spanish forces and slowly regain their freedom, although with grievous costs. Another minor but common misconception is mistaking the date of the holiday. For fluent Spanish speakers, it is quite obvious when this holiday is, seeing as the holiday itself is the literal date. Cinco de Mayo is “Fifth of May” in Spanish. However, for many foreigners, particularly the Americans, mistaking the date is quite easy. Some people have mistaken the month, thinking it was in March, April or January and some have mistaken the actual day, thinking it was in the fifteenth, tenth or first day of the month. From then, the errors just go on. The third misconception is thinking that this holiday is actually critical in Mexico. Although Mexicans do acknowledge it (although rarely), it is not a nation-wide celebration. The truth is Cinco de Mayo is only celebrated by the population living in Puebla, a miniscule municipality in southern Mexico. This celebration is done to commemorate a battle in the town, the Battle of Puebla, one which ended with a surprise victory for Mexico and a boost of morale for the troops. The battle was in 1862, a difficult period of time for the country. This was because the Reform War, a civil war that had tore through Mexico for two years between the Liberal and Conservative parties, had just ended, and there was much political instability. The country owed many war debts to foreign countries and the president, Benito Juárez, had no way of paying them. This brought their economic situation to turmoil and many of the countries that Mexico owed money to were enraged for not receiving their due pay on time. In fact, this anger became so intense that France, Spain and Great Britain teamed up together to create the Tripartite Alliance, a union with the primary goal of invading Mexico, taking control of it, and forcing the government to repay their debts to them. And while they did conquer many parts of the country, this alliance soon crumbled apart when the Spain and Great Britain withdrawed. This was because France, under the rule of Napoleon III (the original Napoleon’s nephew and heir), did not just want their owed money back. They wanted to add Mexico into the French Empire, wanted to start a war, while Spain and Great Britain had no desires to do so. Therefore, these two countries returned their troops home and France kept marching forward. Eventually, the French troops arrived close to Puebla, something which the citizens’ saw before time. Feeling threatened by their presence, they armed themselves and despite the impossible odds they were facing against the larger, better-armed French, urged themselves to win. General Charles de Lorencez was leading the opposition army and because of various prior victories, had incredible confidence in his abilities, believing that the Mexicans would act friendly and yield upon their presence. This was not the case. Mexican General Ignacio Zaragoza had other plans, keeping a defensive position and planning several secret attacks to weaken the French flanks, contrary to General Lorencez’ thoughts of the Mexican giving up as soon as he performed charges of brute force. So, with better-armed forces, how was it that the French were not able to grasp victory? Well, it turns out that General Lorencez made a deadly mistake, one that would cause him 491 dead soldiers, 300 wounded ones and 8 captured: he miscalculated. He tried to attack the northern part of the heavily-armed fortress in Puebla, but he did so too late into the day, using his artillery before noon and by noon advancing his infantry. His brute force didn’t work though, because the Mexicans bravely held their ground and slowly eliminated the French troops, wave by wave. By early afternoon, the French were running out of strength and were in need of depleting their full power against the Mexican army. The artillery soon ran out of ammunition, thus leaving the infantry unsupported and giving the Mexicans a higher advantage. They used this chance to attack and defend from some of the town’s hilltop forts, quickly eliminating the rival side. However, the end was drawing close. The French’s aggressiveness had shrunk and their original battle plan was being crushed by the Mexican garrison. General Zaragoza then released his final attack, with cavalry forces rushing towards enemy lines from the right and left, along with a stream of concealed soldiers flanking them at every side. General Lorencez, seeing that he’d lost too many men compared to Mexico’s measly dead count of 83 men, knew he was in a dead end and waited for Zaragoza to perform the killing move. But the young General held his ground, always keeping his defensive up and running. Seeing that it was the wisest choice, General Lorencez retreated and fled from Puebla. And even though this was possibly the only victory the Mexican army would have in some time, they still rejoiced in their triumph. But then, if Mexicans themselves rarely celebrate this battle, much less this holiday, why do Americans make such a big hassle about it? How did it get to the United States in the first place? The most common answer would be because Americans often make a big hassle out of everything, and because they suddenly feel the urge to gain an excuse to unleash their great partying skills and go flood every Mexican restaurant in town. However, there is a much deeper reason than that. The Battle of Puebla was on 1862, a year after the start of the Civil War in the United States between the Confederates States and the Union. The United States, as you could see, was in a time of turmoil and many foreign countries wanted to take advantage of it, especially since the United States was still one of the world’s powers. This new country suddenly became a target for many more powerful countries, and one of these- yes, you guessed it - France, was particularly interested in that nation. Therefore, their plan to invade Mexico was suddenly even more valuable than before. They could use Mexico not only as a close base to the United States but they could also use their resources and accessibility to gain the victory. But when Mexico won the Battle of Puebla, aiding in the country’s morale, the French temporarily departed from the invasion altogether, giving the Americans enough time to recover from their Civil War. So really, Mexico indirectly saved the United States from foreign invasion during a time of crisis. Therefore, Cinco de Mayo may be the most misunderstood celebration on the planet, but it does have some importance. Not only did it slightly affect American history but it is also a chance for people with Mexican roots to proudly display their heritage, as well as their natural fighting spirit. After all, some holidays aren’t important because of how grand or pompous they are, but because of how meaningful they are to the people. Jumbo PlaneBy: Leslie Coe People are worried with this progress eagle that could be the next generation for planes. The name of this jumbo plane is Skywhale. The jumbo plane’s designer is called Oscar Viñals. This plane will be able to carry 755 passengers, a huge number compared to most planes today. Viñals, the designer, says that it will start flying in 2030. The massive plane will have 6 hydrogen engines to get it off the ground. The plane will also be fill with a engine that would be double than that of the wind turbine. "The best aspect of the Progress Eagle would be its capacity to generate its own energy," says Viñals. Then he added that the flight would also be "noiseless”. The plane will contain several restaurants, shops, and private rooms. "Twelve hours in an airplane should feel more like a select hotel," says Viñals. "It would reduce the stress of a long flight." The plane is also equipped with self repair wings for an emergency if something happens to the wing. Also nobody needs to reaper it, people just needs to build it to let him fly. It also has huge windows for passengers to see by. The AWWA is 77 m of length and 88 m wide, compared to the Airbus which is the plane we are using. The Airbus is 80 m of length and 80 m wide. The Airbus has a little bit of length compared with the AWWA. The AWWA compared with the Boeing plane is still more wide than the Boeing. The Boeing measures 64 m wide and the length is 76 m, one meter less than the AWWA plane. It was designed with micro solar panels which can make the plane be able to have energy to fly. The wings of this plane also reduce the turbulence. Its engines will be able to rotate to a 45 degrees angle which help to lift up the plane. This plane has 3 types of classes: the first class, the business class, and the tourists class. The First Class which is the upper part has a sky view and all luxury things. The Business Class which is in the 2 floor has a comfort place to stay during the flight. And The Tourists Class which is at the bottom of the plane has the same things as the Business Class. People now seeing this plane wants to take a flight in this plane because it has 3 floors and has luxury things on it. Work Cited: "The Monstrous Sky Whale Could Be the Future of Air Travel." Io9. When anorexia it takes over you, you can’t control it. It’s like a sickness, it is a sickness. There are so many reasons why you could become anorexic. It could be genetic or it could be that persons. They don’t know what causes it, it could be anything. We could take Rachael Farrokh for instance, she’s a perfectionist, she had to be perfect and in her eyes she wasn’t. “The only number that would ever be enough is 0. Zero pounds, zero life, size zero, double-zero, zero point. Zero in tennis is love. I finally get it.” ― Laurie Halse Anderson. Rachael’s been suffering from anorexia for ten years; she’s a 37 year-old woman that is 5’7 and weighs only 40 pounds. A woman her age and height should weigh roughly 135lbs. She’s so underweight that she can’t take care of herself. Her husband Rob Edmondson had to quit his job to take care of her and now they can’t afford to pay for medical help. They ended up creating a “GoFundMe” page, people can donate money to help with medical costs. So far less than $200k has been raised. “How silly people were to eat. They thought they needed food for energy, but they didn't. Energy came from will, from self-control.” ― Steven Levenkron. Rachael was valedictorian, which isn’t surprising for a perfectionist; she had her life together 10 years ago. Rachael used to be a personal trainer and senior account executive, but then she became too weak to work. At first she was just trying to lose a bit of weight, however she kept on going and couldn’t stop. Over the last decade Rachael has suffered from blood transfusions, blood clots, edema and heart, liver and kidney failure. Truthfully it’s a miracle that she’s even alive, she’s so underweight that they couldn’t even find a hospital to help her. Until recently, they found a facility to treat her. Rachael is now getting help from ACUTE Center For Eating Disorders in Denver. One of the workers stated that they’ve had similar cases of anorexia, like Rachael's and they believe that she will get the treatment she needs. The only thing is that they have to be extremely careful -considering that she is about 95 lbs underweight- on the amount of food she eats. You must be thinking must “have her eat a lot of food and she’ll be fine” it could kill her if she eats too much. Eating too much could speed up her metabolism, causing her to lose even more weight and losing even more weight will probably kill her. Now the only thing we can do is hope for the best. Hope that she will survive. Work Cited "Anorexia: What Causes People to Become Anorexic?" WebMD. WebMD, n.d. Web. 22 May 2015. "Anorexia Nervosa." Netdoctor. N.p., n.d. Web. 26 May 2015. It’s a typical saturday morning. You are sitting in your couch calmly watching t.v. when suddenly, the ground starts shaking and you tumble over trying to stand up. All of the sudden, pieces of the ceiling start to fall and anxiety and panic form a knot in your throat.. A wall is going to fall on top of you when you become immobilized in shock, and you immediately hear your mother yell “move!”. She grabs and pushes you to safety and you run outside in horror, when you hear “Baaangaang!” and the shaking suddenly stops. You hear sirens across the streets, and have a bad feeling forming in your gut. You desperately start looking for her when you realize you are the only one left now. You wish you were dead, but as an instinct of survival you look around calling for help, and realize that everything around you is destroyed as well. You watch your neighbors in terror as they hug their families in tears. There is nothing left, no family, no house, no food, no water. Nothing. You are alone now, left to survive by your own. This is what some people felt in the 1972 Earthquake. As you may know, there has been a series of minor tremors here in Nicaragua, more specifically from Telica Volcano, the most active volcano here in the country, 112 kilometers northeast of Managua. A local newspaper stated that “The Telica volcano has generated earthquakes and explosions with emission of gases, with no victims or damage, according to the Nicaraguan Institute of Territorial Studies (INETER)”, but there has been 2 seims of similar magnitudes in the richter scale: 2,4 and 2,2, as stated by INETER. On May 8, various inhabitants near the area reported multiple explosions and gases emanations. This reports were verified by the INETER, who went to test and examine the latest gas and seismic activity, and are currently keeping an eye on it through an installed camera and a GPS, donated by the Pennsylvania University in the UNAN (National Autonomous University of Nicaragua in Leon). In May 10th, there was an explosion around eight at night, throwing flaming rocks, but without causing any greater damages. Nine day later in May 19th, the Nicaraguan Government reported 15 small eruptions in those last 24 hours, summing up 456 since May 7th. All of these have caused mild respiratory problems to the population near the areas that have been affected. “We can see that there is a decrease in the seismic-volcanic activity in the Telica," said Murillo according to El Nuevo Diario. The government representative stated that a specialized volcanologist of the Carnegie Institute from the United States would work with the INETER in Nicaragua to examine the situation. After discontinuing the activity, all of a sudden there has been another explosion, this May 26th at 12 p.m. which has created a great smoke cloud that can be seen from all Leon. From then, 70 explosions have been registered. From the first days of may the authorities have been alerting due of the seismic activity in the Telica and Concepcion volcanoes, but now it seems that San Cristobal is waking as well. Currently the Telica volcano is still pretty active and is throwing ashes and smoke, and so we are still expecting more eruptions. The only thing we can do now is to maintain calm, stay safe, and to always take precocious measures. Nicaragua is a seismic and volcanic country and because of that it’s normal for it to shake more often. At least it’s better for it to release heat this way than all of it in a giant explosion. But, do we really know what is happening beneath us? Is a bigger monster arising? These are all question we can’t explain, but one thing we know for sure, the amount of damage we have done to the earth and it may be time for it to give us a final warning. Work Cited Lopez, Eddy.
